song identification

[Will and Joan Wolfe]

Intriguing question from a friend:  Does anybody know a (probably California) bird
that sings "sweetie sweetie hey"  ?

It is from a poem in the Oct. New Yorker called "AuBard Autumn, and may possibly be continuation of the poem's hymn or  something else, so maybe a non-birder would have a different answer.   Hope someone knows what it refers to.  Thanks, and happy migrations,  Joan.
