I hit 3 of 5 best spots for Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrow on Sunday morning by kayak. First at Arcadia Marsh in northern Manistee County. The water levels are so low now that it is impossible to kayak into the good sedge areas. I did see about 80-90 Swamp Sparrows so there were good numbers of birds about. Also had 2 Soras, a Greater Yellowlegs and 4 Snipe.
At Portage Lake the sedge areas were more accessible but again no luck. I saw 2 Green Heron, 2 Great Blue Herons, 2 Pied-billed Grebes, 250 Coots, 42 Blue-winged Teal, and only 2 Killdeer. There was a good amount of shorebird habitat here of course now when most of the shorebirds are gone. Was able to sneak up on a 28 inch Brown Trout in the shallows.
At Bar Lake I got there a bit late but only had Swamp Sparrows and Common Yellowthroats.
