Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge birding auto tour Sept 14

Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge is sponsoring a birding auto tour on
Friday, September 14.  Participants should meet at 6PM at the refuge
headquarters parking lot at the intersection of Curtis and Mower Roads.
Participants are advised to bring birding optics, dress for the weather,
and to bring two-way radios if you have them.  This tour will be cancelled
in the event of severe weather.

Many noteworthy bird species were found during the refuge's open house
weekend September 8 and 9, including:

trumpeter swan
green-winged teal
bald eagle
northern harrier
peregrine falcon
great egret - 100 to 200 roost in the willows near Grefe Tower every
evening
black-crowned night-heron - dozens fly out of the same roosting area every
evening
sandhill crane
black-bellied plover
semipalmated plover
greater yellowlegs
lesser yellowlegs
least sandpiper
pectoral sandpiper
short-billed dowitcher
black tern
common nighthawk
red-headed woodpecker
yellow-bellied sapsucker
yellow-throated vireo
Swainson's thrush
American pipit
bay-breasted warbler
bobolink
