This bird is from the 2005 class of Whooping Cranes from the reintroduction
project that is taking place in Wisconsin. He is a male # 516 - the 16th
crane egg to hatch at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in 2005. You can
read more about this project and follow the 2007 migration flight which has
just begun at http://www.operationmigration.org.
You can read # 516's life history at:

The bird has been coming in to roost at the Haehnle Sanctuary each night for
the past week and was reported as recently as Sunday evening the 14th. There
will be a group of us at the sanctuary tonight (Monday) doing our weekly
Sandhill Crane count as the birds fly into the sanctuary to roost. The
Cranes typically come into the Sanctuary 1 to 1 1/2 hours before sunset. The
Whooping has been coming in anytime between 6:00 and 6:40 pm. Sometimes he
lands in view, other times he lands behind the vegetation or behind one of
the islands, so the best bet is to catch him coming in at dusk or flying out
early in the morning. I would recommend arriving at the lookout sight by
5:30 pm. Directions are at: http://www.haehnlesanctuary.org.
