Today, 18 Nov 2007, Rick Brigham and I had 3 Dunlin, 30 Green-winged Teal (good count), and 2-3 flyby crossbills at the Macatawa River where it crosses River Rd. in Holland (Ottawa Co.). The crossbills were likely White-winged, but were heard only briefly as they flew south over the river. Crossbills appear to be possible almost anywhere near the Lake Michigan shore this year, as I had one earlier this month while watching the Rufous Hummingbird in Benton Harbor which has since stopped visiting that feeder. Both sightings occurred nowhere near any pines.
Lastly, we also had about 25 Bonaparte's Gulls flying upriver at the same location, but they were not concentrating at the east end of Lake Macatawa like they sometimes do.
Good Birding,
Caleb Putnam
