mp3 vs ipod

Just wondering if anyone has experience using either an ipod or mp3 player for playing bird songs/calls.  I know lots of tour guides are now using them.  Any info. on what has worked for you, which type of player is best, pros and cons of any player, etc. would be helpful.  At this point I'm thinking a 30 gb ipod may be the thing to get?
