Chip: Other then the sanctioned official guided KW tours out of Mio and Grayling there are several places to look. We do a federal USGS BBS Route in Oscoda county every year. On this route there are several stops that we see/hear them. These places are designated Kirtlands Warblers areas and marked with the DNR billboards for the public so I'm not giving out "privileged" info. Those stops that we see them that are not desiginated public KW areas I won't disclose.
From Mio go north on M72/M33 5 miles until the highway turns 90 degree east, at that intersection turn left (west) onto Miller Rd. (F32-CO608) head west 8 miles to the intersection of CO489 just north of the village of Red Oak. At that intersection is a "Ride Share" parking lot. The Designated KW Jack Pine areas are all around that intersection (one of our stops) and we have seen/heard them there. Also usually Brown Thrashers, Upland Sandpipers, Brewers Blackbirds and breeding Dark-eyed Juncos are in the area!
Of course the usual well known dependable areas in Crawford county such as up and down Stephan Bridge Rd. Those areas in Crawford county that are the Nat'l Guard Military areas one must not leave the road by vehicle or on foot as there is danger of stepping on unexploded ordinance shells! (this always seemed odd to me to have practice manuevers in a Kirtlands nesting area!)
Further west over in Kalkaska county there are designated marked areas along Fletcher Rd. that runs SE from the Manistee River crossing off CO571 at the ghost town of Sharon!
We have seen/heard them along there also!
I would suppose there are other random spots in these areas that one might see KWs. I hope the few I just mentioned are a help to you.
Good Luck!, Russ Emmons, St. Clair and sometimes Kalkaska countys.

Subject: kirtlands warbler info.
I haven't been to the Mio area in many years to look for KW. Can anyone provide me with locations along roads in the Mio area that are currently good for hearing KW? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Chip Francke
