Chatters -

Went out with my friends Carl and Pat yesterday morning and did a bit of
county birding in Montcalm County. Trying to push the season early with not much
luck.

A few small flocks of Horned Larks; most were dispersed and defending
territory.

Many robins, red-wings, and grackles. Mostly males of the first two; mixed
sex groups at breeding sites for the latter.

Great looks at numerous Sandhill Cranes in the morning light; two female
harriers as well.

Not many Killdeers about; FOS (first of season) meadowlark near Carson City.

Standing water still frozen, ice fishermen on the lakes. Only county bird
was a lone Herring Gull shuffling around on Crystal Lake, picking at a dubious
piece of debris.

White-throated Sparrows singing in the yard today; they didn't winter here.

Take care. - Doug McWhirter
