Steve Santner and I birded Barry County today. Highlights included:

Orchard Oriole: 1st summer male on Jordon Road between Cunningham Road and
Rush Road

Northern Mockingbird: singing from the front yard of a home at 5960 Barber
Road, between Brown Road
        and Carlton Center Road

Red-headed Woodpecker: along Brown Road between Fry Road and Tischner Road

Henslow's Sparrow and Grasshopper Sparrow: at least one of each in a large
field on the west side of Harris
Creek Road between 108th Street and Parmalee

I uploaded to the photo-sharing site
(http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/se_mich/photos.html)
two photos of a Broad-winged Hawk. We saw the hawk fly in and land in a
tree. Just after landing, the bird stretched out its wings and tail feathers and
perched like that for about five minutes. It did not have any prey in its
talons, so it wasn't guarding a meal. Has anyone ever seen a hawk do that
before? I've seen Blue Jays in my yard stretch out in the sun in that manner, and
always assumed they were enjoying some sunbathing. Any ideas as to what this
bird was doing????
