Chatters -

My friend, Pat, and I did a loop out of Lansing today.

Checked part of Muskegon Wastewater. We drove around the East big pond and
through the settling "meadows" to the North. Thousands of swallows, millions
of midges. I was surprised to find I'd never recorded Cliff Swallow in the
county. Very little good shorebird habitat, although the East end mixing unit is
drawn down. Did have 40-50 Spotted Sandpipers on the main dike.

Four or five singing Grasshopper Sparrows were the most commonly perceived
sparrow. No Savannah Sparrows were encountered along the dikes. Did have one
singing Dickcissel in the meadows, one Sandhill Crane, no Upland Sandpipers.

Covered a small bit of woods in Newago County. Wood Thrush and towhee still
singing. Fremont sewage seems to have an active Purple Martin colony/house
with birds still hanging around. Would be a nice project for Audubon/bird
groups near other sewage facilities if they are amenable. Pat found the perfect
blackberry amongst a tasty batch.

Stopped by the sewage ponds in Stanton and had our best variety of shorebirds
there. Killdeer, both flavors of yellowlegs, Solitary, Spotted, and Least.
The only other species today was two Semipalmated at Muskegon. One of the
ponds at Stanton is drawn down and may be good through the season.

Adios. - Doug
