A record breaking 253 bird species were observed for the fall season! This is the highest total in the twenty-one years of surveys that I have, dating back to 1986. The average is roughly 230 species so this was an impressive total thanks, in large part, to good birder coverage. The “A” list of birds included: Harlequin Duck @ Finn Rd Park, BA; Red-throated Loon sightings in HU & IO; Western/Clark’s Grebe* @ the AuSable River Mouth, IO; Ibis Sp.* @ Fish Point, TU; Marbled Godwit on the Lake Huron Shoreline, IO; Parasitic Jaegers & Long-tailed Jaeger* at Finn Rd Park, BA; Black-legged Kittiwake* @ Northport Marina, AR, and Barn Owl* @ Tawas Point, IO. Not to be out-done, the passerine “A” list was equally impressive. They included: an SBA 1st record for Rufous/Allen’s Hummingbird* @ Millington, TU; Townsend’s Solitaire* on Loosemore Rd, HU; Prairie Warbler* @ Tawas Point, IO; Connecticut Warbler @ Bangor Twp, BA; LeConte’s Sparrow @ SNWR, SA; Nelson’s Sharp-tailed Sparrow @ BCSRA, BA; Pine Grosbeak sightings in HU & IO; Red Crosbill sightings in BA & IO, and Evening Grosbeak sightings in BA & IO.
The entire report can be viewed at the Saginaw Bay Birding website.
Good winter birding,
