This morning I checked a patch of Autumn olives on Cedar Rd. north of Manistee for a possible Townsend's Solitare. Yesterday afternoon while heading into Manistee we drove by the spot and I saw a flock of Pine Grosbeaks with another bird that was slightly smaller, slim and long tailed. The long tailed bird flew down into the shrubs and I could not relocate it then or on a return visit an hour later.
This morning I was at the spot at dawn despite the ice-covered snowfall from last night. I could not find the long-tailed bird but did see the following: 70-80 Pine Grosbeaks, 7 Bohemian Waxwings, several Common Redpolls, 2 Pine Siskins, 22 Cedar Waxwings, 3 Robins, 8 Eastern Bluebirds, 1 Hermit Thrush, 1 Northern Shrike, 1 Winter Wren, and a Raven in addition to the other expected species.
The autumn olives are on Cedar Rd. on the north side between Swiatolski and Virgil Johnson Rd. about 3 miles north of Manistee and 2 miles east of Lake Michigan.
