While trying to finish up what we can of the tail end of the MI Breeding Bird Atlas2 for the season we headed up to a few of the north central blocks in the county the other evening which are sorely without coverage. At dusk we tried for Owls with just a plain cassette tape.
   Up in Greenwood Twp. along Duce Rd. and the huge Edison property we easily got 3 E. Screech! One was calling already as we stopped before even playing the tape!  I still think I heard in the distance a faint Saw-Whet calling in the pines on the Edison property.Not 100% sure, I didn't list it, but definetly worth looking into!  Those pines are grown to maturity in many places in the Edison property and as such make correct habitat now for Saw-Whets!
  Down in Kenockee Twp. just east of Avoca we got 2 Eastern Screech!,  West of Avoca along the Mill Creek (Brown Rd.bridge) we got 3 more!   Further down in Wales Twp.  near Goodells we got 2 more!
   We've had one calling in our yard! They start calling easily at this time of year as adults & young are setting up territorys/ looking for mates for next season! Our oldest daughter near Capac, has had nesting E. Screechs with young in one of their nest boxes the past few years!  I've had them try here in one or 2 of our boxes but they can't cope with the Starling situation!
    Owls are considered permanent residents most areas they are found, particulary at this time of year.  Any one who has seen or heard any owl in any county can report it and the whereabouts as it would be a valid & needed entry for the MBBA2
