During the Detroit Audubon Society CBC on 12/17, Bill Rapai and I surveyed
the Timberland Swamp Nature Sanctuary in Springfield Township, Oakland
County. About halfway along the trail, we spotted 3 PILEATED WOODPECKERS.
The first Pileated Woodpecker flew to a tree and remained perched long
enough to be identified. Eventually, it took flight and was almost
immediately followed by two other Pileated Woodpeckers. Later on our walk,
Bill and I discovered more evidence of these birds: A dead tree in which
large, deep rectangular holes had been dug.
Note: Before sighting the Pileated Woodpeckers, Bill and I heard a very
distinct, yet unrecognizable, bird call. Later in the week, I found a
moment to play a recording of a Pileated Woodpecker. It left no doubt--It
was that same loud, ringing "kuk-kuk-kuk" call.
