URGENT: LETTERS NEEDED TO STOP IMPORTATION OF ENDANGERED MONKEYS

Please write today and tell the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife that
you are OPPOSED TO the Los Angeles Zoo receiving a permit to import three
captive-bred Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys (Pygathrix roxellana -- also known
as golden monkeys) from Beijing Wildlife Park, China.

ALL COMMENTS MUST BE RECEIVED BY JULY 16, 2004.

You can just write and say you are opposed to the permit being granted or
you can include the following points:

1.The L.A. Zoo¹s experience with Asian primates is either insignificant or,
in the case of siamangs, even dismal. Since 1965, the L.A. Zoo has reported
16 siamang births. However, only five of those primates survived. Of the 11
deaths, no siamang infant lived longer than 7 months; many lived only a
matter of days.

2. In their natural habitat, the long-haired golden monkeys live in conifer
forests at higher elevations, with snow in the winter. They are a highly
social species, with group size averaging 20-30 for part of the year.
However, smaller groups congregate with others to form huge groups of up to
600 monkeys in a "fusion-fission" society similar to chimps and even humans.

The Los Angeles Zoo cannot adequately simulate either environmental
conditions (temperatures in L.A. average 70 degrees year round) or, more
importantly, social groupings.
