I just called Congressman John Sweeney's office in NY and talked to his
assistant. Apparently, the 224 Congressmen who are sponsoring this bill and
Congress Sweeney who wrote the bill have NOT been hearing from their constituents on
this matter. Contacting Congressman Goodlatte is useless. Goodlatte has to
have the pressure from the rest of the Congressmen before he will release this
bill to the House floor for a vote. I feel sure the bill will pass if the
House of Representatives is given the chance to vote on it.

I told the assistant that Goodlatte may as well be trying to send dogs and
cats to slaughter as that is how objectionable horse slaughtering is to the
majority of the US and the rest of the world.

I cannot stress enough the importance of everyone contacting their own
representatives with any issue that comes up in their area. Don't depend on a
committee president to do what is right b/c they are the first people the lobbyists
get to. We have to let ALL of our representatives know how we feel on any
issue if we want to be successful in getting something passed or defeated,
whichever the case may be. If it's an out-of-state issue and it's a well known
issue, I simply tell them that I am not just calling for me, but calling to
represent the majority of the citizens of the US and I also specifically let them
know when such bills are being discussed internationally. I also mention
AR-NEWS for reference. (The assistant wrote down the info as if she will look it
up on the internet. Good!) They definitely sit up and take notice of US and
international publicity on any legislation. They need calls and letters to
reinforce this though. Please make a call and let them know how you/we feel.

Thanks,
Jeannette Ferro
