The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority is reminding people not to get
too close to whales while they play in north Queensland waters.
Two whales were seen swimming in the channel between Townsville and Magnetic
Island yesterday morning.
The manager of the authority's species conservation unit, Kirsten Dobb, says
while it is a great opportunity to whale-watch locally, spectators need to be
 careful.
"Generally, we like to say, 'stay about 100 metres away'," she said.
"If people remember nothing else, that's the best thing to remember.
"You know, these are big, powerful animals. They can weigh up to 40 tonnes
and get 12 to 15 metres in length. They can do a lot of unintentional damage if
they happen to collide with a boat."
