GEELONG researchers are  working to boost Australia's protection from the 
bird flu virus by helping  control the spread of a recent outbreak in Asia.  
A team from CSIRO's Australian Animal Health Laboratory has provided new  
technology to improve diagnostic capabilities in developing countries.  
Better identification and containment of the avian influenza in Asia is  
expected to reduce the risk of it reaching Australia.  
A strain of the virus has killed and led to the slaughter of more than 10,000 
 chickens in southern Vietnam in recent weeks.  
It follows an outbreak across 10 Asian countries earlier this year which  
claimed the life of millions of birds and more than 20 people.  
CSIRO Livestock Industries' avian virologist Paul Selleck said the Geelong  
laboratory provided reagents, training and improved diagnostics to laboratory  
staff in Asia.
