GEELONG researchers are working to boost Australia's protection from the
bird flu virus by helping control the spread of a recent outbreak in Asia.
A team from CSIRO's Australian Animal Health Laboratory has provided new
technology to improve diagnostic capabilities in developing countries.
Better identification and containment of the avian influenza in Asia is
expected to reduce the risk of it reaching Australia.
A strain of the virus has killed and led to the slaughter of more than 10,000
chickens in southern Vietnam in recent weeks.
It follows an outbreak across 10 Asian countries earlier this year which
claimed the life of millions of birds and more than 20 people.
CSIRO Livestock Industries' avian virologist Paul Selleck said the Geelong
laboratory provided reagents, training and improved diagnostics to laboratory
staff in Asia.
