KOALA protection and conservation groups fear the continual development in  
southeast Queensland could cause its koala population to become extinct in the  
next 20 years if conservation guidelines are not implemented.

As  developments on Brisbane's outer northern and southern suburbs directly 
or  indirectly cause the deaths of thousands of koalas each year, community and 
 volunteer organisations are urging the Government to implement policies to 
halt  the population decline.  
During the peak mating season – which starts now – Queensland Parks and  
Wildlife Service Moggill Koala Hospital attends to up to 18 koalas a day.  
Moggill Koala Hospital ranger Peter Theilemann said up to 16 of those brought 
 to them would arrive dead.
