Subject: Primate Breeding Center

The Times of India dated 22nd June, Tuesday, reports that " The ICMR
is to set up a Rs. 100 crore national center on 23 acres of land for
primate breeding at Sasunavghar in Vasai in technical collaboration
with the NIH of the US.

The center will set up a quarantine lab at a cost of Rs.35 cr. .
including veterinarian and diagnostic labs and an experimental animal
facility. The quarantine lab will be used for taming the primatesand
only when the primates are found fit they will be used for
experiments.

The NIRRH will be the nodal agency for completing the project.30
primates will be kept at a time at the center and will be screened
critically. All international standards will be followed including
providing entertainment space for the primates"

This is extremely disturbing and disgusting. What kind of protests
can be staged at this juncture? Can we write to the district
authorities to stall the project or at least to ensure that a
monitoring commitee be included?

Can anyone suggest anything?
