Researchers who carry out experiments on animals are to retain their
right to anonymity to protect them from extremists, it was announced
today.
But other details about the procedures are to be made available to the
public for the first time, Home Office minister Caroline Flint said.
It follows a review over whether the secrecy covering such activities
would be compatible with freedom of information legislation to be
brought in next year.
The minister said that protecting scientists and their families from
intimidation and harassment was a priority.
The National Anti-Vivisection Society activists said that todays
decision to release some information was a bittersweet victory
following a nine-year campaign.
