JOHANNESBURG - More shark and ray species will be classified as endangered on
a global watch list, in another sign that the planet's oceans are in
trouble, a leading scientist said yesterday.

Overfishing and soaring demand for shark's fin were the prime culprits behind
the threats facing the creatures, said Dr Rachel Cavanagh of the Shark
Specialist Group with the World Conservation Union.
She said at least 10 more species will be added after a meeting of shark
experts in Florida. The Great White, one of the ocean's most feared predators,
is likely to be among those classified as threatened.
The Swiss-based Red List of Threatened Species is a widely used wildlife
barometer. -- Reuters
