New Neighbors Complain About Animal Noise
POSTED: 5:29 pm EDT June 30, 2004
EDGEWOOD, Md. -- A Harford County woman claims to have spent her life
working with state and local agencies to help save wounded or sick animals. Now she
claims she is being forced to get rid of the animals she's trying to save,
WBAL-TV 11 News reporter Jennifer Franciotti reported.

Betty Ack is taking care of some baby possums until they can be released
back into the wild. Ack, a certified wildlife rehabilitator, has helped sick or
injured animals in her Edgewood back yard for more than 20 years, answering
40 to 50 calls a day from agencies like the state police and the Harford
County Sheriff's Office.
"I'll take in anything that's injured, anything at all," Ack said.
She's not kidding. Baby bunnies, groundhogs, pigeons, and a sparrow covered
in oil all needed help to survive.
On Wednesday, she took in an inured box turtle.

Outside her little animal hospital, ducks and other waterfowl gather. They
are at the center of a dispute that's drawn the attention of Harford County
Planning and Zoning, and now, Ack said she has been told to get rid of all the
animals.

"If I can't do it in there, I can't do my wildlife rehabilitation," Ack
said.
What used to be hundreds of acres of woods behind her house is now a new
housing development, and neighbors said the noise is too much.
