Circus coming to town; animal activists attempting boycott
By Terry Dillman Of the New-Times
The Carson & Barnes Circus will roll into Newport for a one-day gig at the
Lincoln County Fairgrounds this Sunday, July 4. The five-ring extravaganza
from Hugo, Okla., has already generated emotional fireworks, mostly from animal
activist groups opposing it.
Nicole Meyer is an elephant specialist in the Captive Animals and
Entertainment Issues Department for the animal rights organization People for Ethical
Treatment of Animals (PETA) - a non-profit organization boasting more than
800,000 members and supporters "dedicated to the protection of animals."
In a June 28 letter to Richard Kissock, executive director of the Lincoln
County Fair, Meyer asked him to "make the compassionate decision not to host
Carson & Barnes, or any other circus with animal acts, on your property in the
future." She claims the United States Department of Agriculture is currently
investigating the circus for alleged violations of the federal Animal Welfare
Act. The circus, she added, has also been cited "numerous times" for
"failure to provide veterinary care, minimum space, shelter from the elements,
adequate ventilation, and clean drinking water."
