The circus is coming to Brookings-Harbor Thursday, and along with lions,
tigers, elephants and acrobats it's bringing controversy sparked by two open
federal investigations, one of which is linked to treatment of an elephant.
An official from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health
Inspection Service confirmed that the agency is investigating Carson and
Barnes Circus for two incidents, but would release no details.
Carson and Barnes spokesperson Brenda Pobre said one investigation is
regarding a truck accident that happened last year in the Dakotas. No animals or
people were hurt in the accident, she said.
The USDA is also investigating the April 2003 death of the circus's
five-year-old Asian elephant, Jennie.
Shortly after Jennie died from the elephant herpes virus, People for the
Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) called for a USDA investigation, Pobre said.
"Jennie was only five years old and she died prematurely," Nicole Meyer, PETA
elephant specialist, said.
Meyer said African elephants are known to carry the virus, which can be
passed to Asian elephants if they are in close proximity to one another.
Carson and Barnes Circus tours with eight total elephants – two African and
six Asian.
