Subject: [hsi-animalia] New Egyptian Federation for Animal Welfare
New Egyptian Federation for Animal Welfare Established
The Egyptian Federation for Animal Welfare (EFAW) was officially established on 21 June 2004 by ten Egyptian animal welfare NGOs. This confederation will be able to speak with a much louder and compelling voice than any of the individual entities to improve animal welfare in Egypt.
The founding members include:
* The Egyptian Society of Animal Friends (ESAF) Ahmed El Sherbiny
* Egyptian Veterinary Medical Association Prof Dr. Farouk El Dessouky
* The Society of the Protection and Welfare of Donkey and Mules in Egypt (SPWDME) Dr. Adel Kishek
* Society for the Protection of Animal Rights in Egypt (SPARE) Amina Abaza
* Brooke Hospital for Animals Brig Hassan Samy
* Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - Cairo Branch (SPCA) Dr. Ahmed Samir Salem
* Egyptian Veterinary Association for Buffalo Development (EVABD) Prof Dr. Mahmoud Newaito
* Egyptian Society of Animal Management (ESAM) Prof Dr. Rabea Hassan Fayed
* Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - Port Saaid Branch (SPCA) Naguib Hassan
* Egyptian Veterinary Society for Food (EVSF) Prof Dr. Sabry Awad allah
Several more societies are being recruited for membership beyond the original ten required by the Government of Egypt to form a confederation of NGOs.
The Federation elected lawyer Ahmed El Sherbiny as Chairperson. Ahmed is also the Chairperson of the Egyptian Society of Animal Friends and the driving force behind creation of the Federation.
The Federation's initial mission is, by invitation, to help draft Egypt's first comprehensive animal welfare legislation. Without such legislation in place, it would be difficult to make progress in improving animal welfare in Egypt. Thanks to a posting on Animalia, animal welfare and protection laws from around the world were gathered and reviewed to develop draft legislation for Egypt. The strength of the Federation will now be used to help push the law through the legislative process to become a reality.
