30 cited at cockfight

TOPPENISH -- An anonymous tip led Yakima County sheriff's officers to a 
weekend cockfight where they cited 30 people for attending, a gross 
misdemeanor offense.

Officers from the Sheriff's Office, Washington State Patrol and the Wapato 
police found more than 100 vehicles parked near the fight in this community 
just south of Yakima.

Organizers had built plywood fighting arenas and hid them in the trees and 
tall brush along the south side of the Yakima River, officers said. Many 
participants fled when officers arrived. Authorities receive tips about at 
least a half-dozen such events each year.
