from Pork Magazine:
Whole Foods CEO Predicts Demise of "Factory Farms"
For 25 years, Texas-based Whole Foods Markets has made organic and natural
foods offerings into a $3.7-billion grocery chain with 157 stores in 28
states. The July issue of Fast Company magazine referred to Whole Foods'
management structure as something "out of Star Trek," and giving John
Mackey, CEO, high praise.
Although Mackey is a vegan, his stores sell meat and poultry. However,
his views influence the products offered in the stores, including an
initiative is to raise Whole Foods' animal-care requirements beyond industry
standards. He believes Americans "will shun factory farms that treat animals
like products."
Mackey has made statements, such as "20 years from now, factory farms
will be illegal in the United States." This is worth noting because Whole
Foods and other niche retailers are increasing their influence on how
Americans view food origins.
