Gorilla Stages His Own Zoo Tour
BERLIN (UPI) -- One of the Berlin zoo's great apes was nursing a sedative hangover Thursday after escaping his compound to join the crowds, The Telegraph reported.
Bokito, a 6-foot-6, 260-pound silverback gorilla sized up his 15-foot glass barrier wall Wednesday and decided to climb over it.
As throngs of people ran in fright, Bokito ambled over to a bench facing the ape exhibit and sat down. Two zookeepers tried to lead him away but he Bokito gently resisted until a veterinarian appeared.
The ape appeared resigned to his fate, and let out a big sigh before walking hand-in-hand back toward the compound, the newspaper said.
But in a flash, Bokito bolted and appropriately bounded toward the antelope enclosure. That's where a narcotic dart got him, and he simply sat down.
Zookeepers led him away, describing it as trying to guide someone who is very big and very drunk.
The zoo has arranged for a new and bigger glass barrier, and all the apes are confined to quarters until it is finished.
