30 Cited at Rooster Fight

TOPPENISH — Police cited 30 people Saturday evening after an anonymous tip
led to the discovery of a large rooster fight in the Toppenish area.

Officers with Yakima County Sheriff's Office, Washington State Patrol and
the Wapato Police Department arrived at the event about 6 p.m. and found
more than 100 vehicles parked there.

Organizers had hidden plywood fighting arenas in trees and tall brush along
the south side of the Yakima River. When they saw the officers, many of
those in attendance fled.

Rooster fighting involves attaching curved razor blades, called spurs, to
roosters' legs and having them fight. Attendants bet on which ones will
survive.

Police recovered spurs, scales, ledgers and other paraphernalia at the
scene. Those arrested were cited and released. Attending such an event is a
gross misdemeanor.

Rooster fights are fairly common, said Sgt. Randy Briscoe of the Sheriff's
Office, adding that authorities receive tips on at least a half dozen such
events each year. The fights vary in size and location and attract a
cross-cultural audience, he said.

Sunday night, police were still trying to find out who owned the property
where the fight took place. Police left the roosters at the scene, but
assume most of them were taken home by their owners, Briscoe said.
