NEW BEDFORD -- Buddhists in America follow the centuries-old tradition of
respecting life in all its forms.
"They don't kill the animals," said Ping Ping Huang, a Buddhist student at
the Grace Gratitude Buddhist temple in Manhattan's Chinatown. "They feel pain.
They don't want the animal to suffer."
Every year, the New York Buddhists continue the tradition of buying animals
destined for slaughter and releasing them. The practice is called "releasing
life."
"They believe it brings them karmic merit," Harry Leong said of the
Buddhists. He is another student with the Grace temple. "Saving the lives that
otherwise would be killed is part of the Buddhist practice; showing reverence."

If we cut up beasts simply because they cannot prevent us and because we are
backing our own side in the struggle for existence, it is only logical to
cut up imbeciles, criminals, enemies, or capitalists for the same reasons.
