Fast Food? Vegans say no, thanks.
Dear Editors:
The notion that vegans might support Burger King goes to show that one can
find somebody with a Web site to say just about anything (Andy Lamey, "Holy
Cow! Vegans Like Burger King"; 26 June, at F7). If fast-food sales are
under fire, vegans should be the last ones to come to their rescue.
Thoughtful vegetarianism considers not only a company's menu, but also its
general track record of social and environmental responsibility, before
buying what that company is selling. The major burger chains come up short
on all counts.
Friends of Animals, a U.S.-based, international organization working to end
humanity's exploitation of other animals since 1957, encourages people to
support local vegetarian restaurants. Surely, a key part of being vegan is
offering support to the everyday people who do their best to create an
ethical culture.
