AR-News: (NZ) SPCA supports hi-tech cat tracking

Taranaki  SPCA branches are supporting a national call for cats to be 
microchipped, but  admit they have a job ahead of them convincing the public. 
Auckland SPCA chief executive Bob Kerridge is campaigning for microchips  as 
a way to identify owners and cut down the stray problem.  
New Plymouth SPCA manager Andrea Kopu said tagging cats electronically  was a 
great idea because they often turned up in areas a long way from home.  
"We get a lot of stray cats and the majority are not claimed."  
Although microchipping cats would cost about $50, responsible owners  should 
not mind paying the one-off fee to get their animals back, she said.
