ANIMAL LIBERATION LEADS CALL FOR ROYAL COMMISSION INTO THE ROYAL 
SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS

ANIMAL LIBERATION WILL NO LONGER TOLERATE THE RSPCA FAILING ABYSMALLY 
TO PROTECT ANIMALS FROM CRUELTY DUE TO CORPORATE FARMING INTERESTS' 
CONTROL AND RELATED IRRESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT POLICY

Mark Pearson, Executive Director Animal Liberation NSW states:-

"After the exposure of the RSPCA on ABC 4 Corners last night it is 
blatantly clear that the community cannot have any confidence in it 
to protect innocent animals from abuse and cruelty. All directors who 
knowingly permitted the vested interests to undermine the proper 
implementation of RSPCA policy must be instantly dismissed and we 
call for a thorough, transparent external investigation such as a 
Royal Commission."

"All inspectorate and prosecution powers of the RSPCA, except minor 
authority in relation to companion animals, should be stripped away 
and moved to a special unit of the Police Service. We can not trust 
it with this compromised charity."

Ralph Hahnheuser, Campaign Director Animal Liberation SA states:-

"With the disturbing, brutal truth about the RSPCA now exposed 
publicly, the government can not continue to allow this statute body 
to be the central enforcer of animal protection legislation. Most 
powers must be immediately removed and given to the police so that 
more animals don't suffer from on-going cruelty and distress.

"Nothing less than a Royal Commission into this fallen organisation, 
the RSPCA, will be acceptable. We call on the State governments to 
urgently implement such an investigation immediately."

GREENS CALL FOR RSPCA TO BE STRIPPED OF THEIR POWERS

The Greens are supporting calls by Animal Liberation for the RSPCA to 
be stripped of its powers, after last night's 4 Corners programme 
revealed that the welfare of animals is under threat due to vested 
interests, said Greens MLC Lee Rhiannon.

"Last night's 4Corners programme revealed the extent of the 
relationship between RSPCA and the corporate farming industry," said 
Ms Rhiannon.

"The corporate farming industry is clearly out to maximise profits, 
which can often mean that the welfare of animals suffers.

"An example of the extent to which the RSPCA is compromised is the 
business relationship between PACE egg farms and the RSPCA, where the 
RSPCA receives money from every carton of eggs sold.

"I understand that in NSW, the RSPCA has condoned battery cages for 
hens. It is unacceptable for the organisation which has sole 
responsibility for the policing of cruelty to animals to endorse 
battery cages, which animal welfare experts worldwide have condemned.

"The RSPCA is a charity and doesn't have the resources to adequately 
police animal welfare. The organisation is also vulnerable to be 
taken over by vested corporate interests.

"The Greens support calls by Animal Liberation for the RSPCA to be 
stripped of its powers as a statute body. Policing of animal welfare 
should be the responsibility of the Government, not of a charity.

"The Government can resolve this unsavoury situation by legislating 
to ensure that the policing of the prevention of cruelty to animals 
is moved to a special unit of the police," said Ms Rhiannon.

GREENS MOVE TO BAN LIVE ANIMAL EXPORT

The Greens will move amendments to government legislation to ban the 
live animal export trade (see over).

Following harrowing revelations of animal cruelty and infiltration of 
the RSPCA by battery farming exponents on the ABC TV program Four
Corners last night, Greens Senator Bob Brown said a ban is due.

"The industry remains a global affront to the humanitarian treatment 
of traded livestock," Senator Brown said.

"The Cormo Express scandal underscores the industry's own failure to 
get its house in order."

The bill will be debated in the Senate this week.
