by Bill McDowell on 6/22/04 for Meatingplace.com

A 25-year-old Florida woman believed to have contracted variant
Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease when she lived in England reportedly died of the
disease Sunday morning.

In April 2002, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
announced that (then) 22-year-old Charlene Singh was diagnosed with the
United States' first documented case of vCJD. Although she was not expected
to live more than a few months at the time of her diagnosis, experimental
treatments of quinacrine, as well as hyperbaric treatment, prolonged her
life.

The woman was born in England in 1979; her family moved to the United
States in 1992.

An autopsy on Singh is scheduled for today, according to CNN.
