As crowds of families and circus fans gathered under the big top this
weekend, a crowd of a different kind gathered across the street.
A group of protesters carrying signs and banners stood across the street
from the Cole Bros.. Circus held in Thomas J. Dodd Stadium. The group
opposes the circus using animals in its acts.
As numerous cars pulled into the stadium parking lot to watch the circus
Sunday, Beverly Lauterbach and eight others stood quietly across the
street in front of Levine Distributing Co. in the Norwich Industrial
Park. The group stood in the same place Saturday.
Lauterbach said she and other animal rights activists finds the use of
animals in circus performances to be unjust and cruel.
"This is cruelty," she said. "There's no doubt about it. We believe the
use of animals in circuses has to stop."
