WASHINGTON -- An effort to impose a one-year ban on the killing of bison that
are part of the Yellowstone National Park herd was rejected Thursday by the
House of Representatives by a vote of 215 to 202.
Supporters of the ban tried to attach it to the Interior Department's fiscal
year 2004 spending bill. The amendment would have specifically prohibited the
National Park Service from killing excess bison that are rounded up.
The congressional fight over the fate of bison is becoming an annual affair.
Last year, opponents of the ban tried and failed to attach the same amendment
to the Interior Department's fiscal year 2004 spending bill.
