The American bald eagle (our national symbol whose decline helped
spur the Endangered Species Act and a ban on the pesticide DDT) will
be removed from the threatened species list this year a/w a top
Bush administration official.
An administration point man on the ESA said it is time to concentrate
recovery on more needy species. He states "It is no longer endangered
but it is still deserving of special protection."
These birds will still be safeguarded under the federal Bald Eagle
Protection Act of 1940 which prohibits killing or selling them.
The Samual Roberts Noble Foundation's wildlife research unit near
Allen, Okla. will be closed this month. This research project near
Allen will be finished but the Foundation will continue to conduct wildlife
research at another location states a spokesman for the Foundation.
The Foundation is considering options for sale of the property and
has acquired additional land in Love County which provides suitable resources
for continuing deer management studies.
This new property is much closer to the Foundation's headquarters in
Ardmore, Okla.
This group has operated a wildlife research unit for more than 20 years
and they state that Foundation resources will be more efficiently utilized
at the Love County location.
