RESCUERS have freed a whale which has been trapped inside a harbour on
Tasmania's west coast since Tuesday.
Spokesman for the Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment
Warwick Brennan said improved weather conditions helped rescuers liberate the
30-tonne sperm whale, stuck on a sandbar in the Macquarie Harbour, at Stranhan.
A change in direction of a strong inward wind helped rescuers free the whale
from the sandbar and allow it to swim into deeper water about 9.30am (AEST),
Mr Brennan said.
Rescuers in boats then shepherded the whale through the narrow head of the
harbour and into open waters, he said.
The 14-metre adult male became stranded on the sand bar on Tuesday, while
four other dead sperm whales believed to be from the same pod were later
discovered on nearby Ocean Beach.
