WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- Two St. Bernards who gained notoriety in
northern Macomb County for killing two llamas, a pig, and a 600-pound steer --
are dead.
Susan Jeroue, the Macomb County Animal Shelter's chief animal control
officer, said the dogs ravaged animals in nearby farms in a series of attacks that
began Oct. 29, 2003, and stretched until April 8.
The dogs, Beethoven and Cujo, attacked with such ferocity, that Jeroue asked
the courts to use a 1919 livestock protection law to put them down, the
Detroit Free Press reported in a Thursday story.
But Walter Smith, the dogs' owner, said he lost two great companions. If they
were killers -- which he said he doubts -- they must have been leading double
lives.
"I've got a 2-year-old granddaughter, and she used to climb all over them and
pull their ears," Smith said. "They never once snapped at her."

Wild animals never kill for sport. Man is the only one to whom the torture
and death of his fellow creatures is amusing in itself.
