The Royal Society has launched an investigation into the cost of protecting
British researchers from illegal action by animal rights extremists.
Anti-vivisectionists immediately expressed concern that the investigation was
simply an attempt to gain further public sympathy for research using animals.
The inquiry will look at the costs of illegal protests against facilities and
staff - such as fitting extra alarm systems, reinforcing facilities and
employing security staff.
The Society says there are plenty of anecdotes of people being attacked or
buildings being vandalised but no concrete numbers to indicate the scale of the
problem.
"We're using it to highlight to government the seriousness of this problem,"
it said. "The feeling is that the legislation at the moment is not protecting
researchers."

Ask the experimenters why they experiment on animals, and the answer is:
"Because the animals are like us." Ask the experimenters why it is morally OK to
experiment on animals, and the answer is: "Because the animals are not like
us." Animal experimentation rests on a logical contradiction. --Professor Charles
R.Magel (1920- )
