MIAMI -- Dozens of animal rights activists critical of the way the City
of Miami's Police Department has run the county's animal shelters
gathered Monday to voice their concerns.

There have been claims of animal cruelty since the department took over
the system a few years ago, and now activists want to know if animals
are being properly cared for.

"We want to be sure the animals are being treated as humanely as
possible even if it is the end of their life. No one deserves to die in
terror here," said Cindy Hewitt, of the Cat Network.
