IDEA, The Institute for the Development of Earth Awareness, is in the final
year of pre-production of a photodocumentary book and traveling museum and
gallery exhibition campaign that will change tremendously the way people
view the 10 billion farm animals raised and slaughtered each year in the
United States.
Marjorie Spiegel, author of The Dreaded Comparison: Human and Animal
Slavery, and Executive Director of IDEA, entered slaughterhouses as a
photojournalist and thoroughly documented the complete procedure in cattle,
calf, chicken and pig slaughter facilities. The resulting collection of 100
images will form the basis of a national educational campaign, entitled
THEM, that will include a book, traveling museum and gallery exhibition
tour, poster series for public and classroom exhibition, and more.
THEM is the first in-depth photodocumentary of slaughterhouses to be
undertaken, and given the increasing difficulty of entering these
facilities, THEM may also be the only such project to ever be produced.
Ms. Spiegel will be presenting a preview slideshow of images from the
project, along with a Q&A session, at AR2004. IDEA will also have a table at
AR2004, where signed copies of The Dreaded Comparison will be available for
purchase. All proceeds from book sales and membership to IDEA will directly
support this important project. IDEA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
