INJURED DOG NEEDS AN OPERATION
A fifteen pound male terrier/Dachshund mix (short hair black with a white
chest) was found Friday in a bad neighborhood in the New Orleans area.
He was lying on the side of the road (Avenue A in Merrero) with a few
boys standing around him, poking him with a stick. His right fore-leg was
broken. His left eye was so swollen it appeared to be dislodged from the
socket. And, he had numerous scratches and abrasions in different stages
of healing.
James Talley, the man who rescued him and took him to the vet, couldn't
be sure if the dog had been hit by a car, as "crack heads" (as he
described them) sitting on a nearby porch claimed, or if the dog had been
the victim of intentional abuse (possibly by dog fighters). [As you may
know, dogfighters use dogs like this that they may steal, or find running
at large, as "training" subjects for their fighting dogs.]
Treatment over the weekend has reduced the eye swelling. However, the
break in the leg is going to be problem which may require invasive
surgery to the leg. It is a simple spiral fracture that may be difficult
to set (and pin in all probability). Mr. Tally is awaiting word from the
vet about the extent of the problem and the cost of fixing it. The leg
may need to be amputated. A guess at the cost range was given as $900 to
$2000.
Mr. Talley will provide a permanent home for the dog, but he cannot
afford to pay the high costs that may be needed for the operation.
IF YOU CAN PLEDGE a specific amount that you could donate for this worthy
cause, I will keep a record of the total as pledges come in. If enough is
pledged to cover the cost of the operation, I'll check it out with the
vet to make sure everything is true and correct as stated, and let you
know so you can then send in your pledged amount.
Thank you for what ever you might be able to do to help in this "Good
Samaritan" rescue.
Sincerely,
Pinckney
