There was a big celebration in a village in northern Thailand last weekend
for a new married couple.
Slideshow: Water Buffalo Get Hitched
Boopan and Meegnu, two water buffalos, were married in a rice field. They
were united in a special ceremony that included guests from the human and buffalo
communities.
An official from Thailand's Livestock Department was on hand to sign papers,
registering the nuptials.
Water buffalo were a key animal in the economy of the Thai countryside for
centuries. Most Thai farmers now use machinery but the animals are still
important to villagers.
The two animals came from different villages and had not met before last
Saturday.
This is not the first time animals in Thailand have wed.
In recent years, elephants have gotten married on Valentine's Day and two
orangutans had a huge wedding in 1996.

We are part of the earth and it is part of us. The perfumes flowers are our
