FORT PIERCE — The dogs will never be adopted, but they could still go home.
For two weeks, 30 pit bulls have kept the staff of the Humane Society of St.
Lucie County on edge. The dogs were seized from two county residents whom
state investigators arrested in late May and charged with being part of a major
South Florida drug trafficking ring.
If the men come to the humane society today and pay a large impound fee, they
can take their dogs home. If they do not, the dogs will be destroyed.
"We're concerned, but we just don't have the authority to hold someone's
dogs," said Brenda Knight, shelter manager. "We would be taking a chance if we let
someone adopt them."
