The European Recommendations concerning the production of foie gras are to be re-examined within the end of the year. Key issues in this matter will be scientific research into the welfare of force-fed animals and on alternative methods to force-feeding.

On both these points, we have today become quite accustomed to the arguments of the foie gras industry –and of its scientific partners.

As the European institutions will certainly be lobbied by CIFOG, the foie gras interprofessional committee, we have resolved to send them a letter going through the producers' arguments (copy attached).

The letter principally aims to:

-          expose the bias of the research carried out so far (funds emanating from the producers, expected results, etc.);

- call attention to issues that the research has failed to acknowledge, such as the poor health of force-fed animals and the high mortality rates.

Along with the letter will be some footage from a video we recently shot inside force-feeding units in France, so as to convey better than through words the plain reality of the practice.

Though certain lobbying operations gain from going public, we believe it is best to keep this initiative confidential for the time being. Indeed, we should avoid prompting the industry to develop counter-arguments and we still need scope to continue shooting the video (difficult as it is, this could become impossible should CIFOG warn its members against us).

As of now, we are going to attend to the preparation of the campaign planned for the end of year 2004 celebrations. No doubt this will give us opportunities to work together toward a ban on force-feeding –a practice that affects over 30 million animals a year in France alone.

Sincerely,

Citizens' Initiative for the Banning of Force-Feeding
