WINNIPEG -- Chicken owners in a Winnipeg neighbourhood have been
told to get rid of their pets by June 30th or else face fines of
one-thousand dollars a day.

Under Winnipeg's exotic animal bylaw, poultry are prohibited
from being kept at residences.

City spokesman Tim Dack says only a conditional zoning allowance
would allow the four families to keep their chickens.

Lillian Meisters says losing her 11 chickens would be like
losing a family member.

While it is illegal to keep chickens within city limits,
officials have looked the other way for years.

But when Meisters' neighbours started to complain about the
noise and smell, the city gave the birds their marching orders.

Yesterday, a small group of chicken owners went to City Hall to
ask councillors to let them keep their birds.
