MONROVIA, Calif. (AP) - Animal rights protesters who have targeted a local
family must stay 300 feet away from their home under a new city law.
The City Council on Tuesday unanimously passed an ordinance restricting
picketing in residential neighborhoods. Activists could march there but the new
ordinance forbids them to target a particular home.
The new ordinance could take effect as soon as June 16.
"This is a sad day in Monrovia," Councilman Dan Kirby said. "Thirty-six
thousand people's rights have been limited because of a few people who can't
respect others."
The ordinance follows three protests since April at the home of Mitchell
Lardner, a manager for Sumitomo Corp. of America, which demonstrators allege is
linked to a New Jersey company that performs tests on animals.
Mayor Rob Hammond said the Lardners "live like prisoners in their own home."
Protesters, sometimes dressed in Halloween masks, shouted insults and slogans
during two demonstrations and on May 29, someone threw a piece of cinderblock
at the car of a security guard hired to protect the family, breaking his jaw.
A Sumitomo spokesman said the company has no links to any companies that test
on animals.
