June 9 (Bloomberg) -- The U.K. is speeding an investigation into a cattle
virus that may pose a risk to human health and be linked to 20 other cow
deaths during the past decade.

Chief Veterinary Officer Debby Reynolds has asked the Health Protection
Agency to treat the risk assessment as a ``matter of urgency,'' the
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said in a statement.

The investigation was prompted by the December death of a Holstein cow in
Cumbria, northwest England, that suffered partial leg paralysis. Tests on
the milking heifer showed lesions on the brain suggestive of a virus,
though not a ``brain-wasting'' disease such as bovine spongiform
encephalopathy, Defra said.
